Central Coast Gallery Experiences for Art Lovers

When visiting the Central Coast stop into one of the local galleries for a unique and eclectic art experience. A variety of small galleries dot the Central Coast from Pismo Beach to Cambria, welcoming visitors of all ages to explore the creativity of local artists and crafters.

Two of the area's must-visit art attractions are Avila Gallery and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

Avila Gallery

Art lovers will want to make a point to stop by Avila Gallery located in the charming Landing Passage area of downtown. Here, visitors will find a showcase of beautiful jewelry, paintings, pottery, and more created by resident artists, jewelers, ceramicists, and painters.

Established in 2015 as a space for artists to work, sell, and teach, the Avila Gallery creates a platform for people not only to view the artwork but to talk and learn about all things art.

Opportunities for instruction are available for those looking to unleash their inner artist. Classes include painting, beading, and jewelry fabrication and enameling from the gallery’s resident artists.

San Luis Obispo Museum of Art

Established in the 1950s, the museum was originally conceived as a collective space for artistic expression before eventually transforming into its current identity in Mission Plaza on Broad Street in San Luis Obispo in 2011. The museum offers a diverse visual art experience for art lovers of all ages.

The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art has a mission to enrich the community with a wide range of artistic encounters. The museum’s Permanent Collection was first conceived by longtime volunteer Arne Nybak, a strong supporter of Central Coast artists and the artistic richness of the region.

Visitors will be immersed in the area’s artistic culture through the museum’s exhibitions, education, creation, and collaboration. Free weekly tours of the current exhibitions are given every Saturday by trained guides so that guests come to a deeper understanding of the artwork on display.

The museum also sponsors adult and child classes and workshops, visiting artist lecture series, programs in crafts, oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, printmaking, and photography.

So, if you’re a supporter of the arts and enjoy being immersed in local artistic culture, make sure to add a trip to both the Avila Gallery and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art to your itinerary during your next visit to the area.
