Bike Ride Around Avila Beach: Your Guide to the Area’s Best Cycling Routes
With comfortable year-round temperatures, scenic views, and
trails for both mountain biking and road biking, Avila Beach is the perfect
locale for a ride. Embark on a cycling adventure that offers a route for every
level of cyclist from shorter, casual rides to challenging terrain.
Are you ready to set off on your Avila Beach cycling
experience? The area offers a variety of scenic routes that both begin and end
in Avila Beach. Here are our favorites:
Highway 1
Highway 1 is a popular cycling route along the Central
Coast. Start off in Avila Beach, which is just a short distance from the
Highway. Head south toward Pismo Beach to cruise along the frontage beachside
roads with breathtaking ocean views or take off north toward San Luis Obispo
and take in the green, rolling hills along the cycling-friendly highway.
Bob Jones Trail
Quite possibly the most well-known Avila Beach bike path is
the Bob Jones Bike Trail. Ideal for cyclists of all levels, including kids, the
trail offers an easy and flat 5-mile ride. The
trail can be accessed from either Ontario Road at the east end or downtown
Avila Beach at the west end.
Bike through a sycamore forest on this route
that passes by a Buddhist temple, apple orchards, a creek and estuary, and over
the Avila Beach Golf Resort bridge. Sycamore Mineral Springs, Avila Hot Springs, and the Avila Valley Barn are also easy to reach from the trail.
Avila Beach Drive
Avila Beach Park is the starting point for
this scenic ride. Head west on Avila Beach Drive to pedal along the ocean.
Then, take a turn for a jaunt down the Cal Poly Pier before continuing west to
the Port San Luis Pier. You’ll encounter some restaurants along the route if
you’re angling for a lunch break. Head back to Avila Beach, continuing along
Avila Beach Drive along San Luis Obispo Creek before reaching the end of the
road at the Ontario Ridge Trailhead and Highway 1.
See Canyon and Perfumo Canyon
Traverse this paved cycling path, which
features a gradual 4-mile climb past Avila Beach vineyards, and local piers.
Just off of San Luis Bay Drive, See Canyon Road boasts a steeper climb for
cyclists seeking a challenge before it intersects with Perfumo Canyon Road.
From here, you’ll enjoy a scenic ride across rolling hills before descending
onto the Irish Hills Natural Preserve just south of San Luis Obispo.
Edna Valley Loop
Northeast of Avila Beach, the Edna Valley
Loop is accessible from Price Canyon Road. The route takes riders on Corbett
Canyon Road, Tiffany Ranch Road, Orcutt Road, Biddle Ranch Road, and Edna Road.
Pass by some of the area's notable vineyards and wineries.
