Avila Beach is a Destination for All Seasons . . . Even Winter

Getaways at the beach aren’t just for summer. Avila Beach is ideally situated in the Port San Luis Harbor surrounded by mountains, giving it a comfortable year-round climate with little fog unlike other area beaches.

While sunbathing may not be on the agenda in January and February, there are numerous other seasonal activities to keep you busy and enjoying yourself. And with a lot less tourists in the winter, it’s an ideal time to plan a vacation to this coastal California paradise.

Get out on the water for whale watching or surfing, spend the day wine tasting, take in the wildlife, work up an appetite hiking or biking, play a game of golf or shop till you drop.

Monarch Butterfly Grove

Open through February, the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove just off Highway 1 is one of only five sites in the state that has counts of over 10,000 butterflies annually. Every year thousands of vibrant orange and black Monarch Butterflies flock to the area, seeking refuge from freezing northern winters. The butterflies cluster in a grove of Eucalyptus trees. During the season, the Docent Trailer opens at 10:00 AM and closes at 4:00 PM daily. Knowledgeable and well-informed volunteer docents offer daily talks and information.

Hiking & Biking

Winter has ideal temperatures for tackling the varied terrain and variety of hiking and biking options in the area. Enjoy the natural beauty on trails for beginners and advanced enthusiasts.

Avila Beach Whale Watching

Every year the California Grey whales travel past the San Luis Bay on the largest large mammal migration on earth. Sightings are in full swing by the first week of January as they pass by, heading south to their mating and calving grounds in the shallow lagoons located halfway down the Baja California peninsula. Whale watchers typically see groups of three to four whales as they head south until mid-February. The season usually lasts until mid-May. Avila Beach Whale Watching tours give passengers a front row seat to the whales and other wildlife from the 28 ft power catamaran “Pacific Flyer.”

Surfing & Kayaking

Avila beach is one of the best places for beginning surfers to get their feet wet with almost perfect conditions thanks to its protected position on the coastline. Gear can be rented at the Sea Barn on the Promenade. Venture out on your own or enlist the help of Avila Beach Surf School for lessons. If you prefer to stay in the boat, kayaking is a good choice. Avila is sheltered from the large swells and ocean winds other areas experience, and with its abundant sunshine and wildlife it’s the ideal location for kayaking for every skill level. There is even public beach access for the Point San Luis Lighthouse.

Avila Beach Golf Resort

The Avila Beach Golf Resort is, perhaps, the most popular on the Central Coast, nestled in the hills and on the edge of the bay. The resort includes a par 72, 6500-yard championship course and neighborhood bar, serving delicious small bites. Golfers of all abilities will enjoy the challenge of this scenic course. Brush up on your swing before your tee time by vising the driving range, which boasts a large, two-tier putting green with a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.
